Measures for Protecting Rare Animals Taken in DPRK

Pyongyang, March 10 (KCNA) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has directed great efforts to protecting and increasing animals which are rare and in danger of becoming extinct. In recent years the government has taken various measures to reset reserves in the country and set up new reserves for the animals in danger of extinction.
Good conditions have been provided so as to protect and propagate some 200 species of rare animals including Korean tiger, sable, deer, moose, bear, Tadorna cristata, white-bellied black woodpecker, Eumeces coreensis, Salamandrella keyserlingii and Salvelinus malma m. chonjiensis.
Among the new ones is the natural reserve of Mt. Kwanmo (2,540 meters high above the sea level) in the northeastern part of the country for such rare animals living in the northern area as the Korean tiger, bear, goral and sable.
Researchers of the Central Zoo have made many achievements in the scientific research for proliferation of animals outside the habitats.
Typical of the animals are Korean tiger, bear and Grus japonensis.
The government has also taken concrete measures for protecting and propagating crane and spoonbill, each accounting for about 1,000 in East Asia.
All the good habitats on the way of the migratory birds have been set up as their reserves.
Deep attention has been paid to the proliferation of new ecological species of animals. Typical of them is Salvelinus malma m. chonjiensis.
Ichthyologists of the country took fries of char to Lake Chon on Mt. Paektu from rivers to adapt them to the climatic and hydrological conditions and ecological environment of the lake and thus bred a new species of char.
The new one grows as big as over 85 centimeters, far larger than other species of char. It inhabits in the highest place (2,200 meters above the sea level) in the southern tip of the Eurasian continent.
A deep-going study is being conducted into Salvelinus malma m. chonjiensis as fish protected in the international biosphere reserves."-KCNA

"Moran Hill

Moran Hill is located in the central part of Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Round hillocks with Choesung Pavilion (95 m high), the highest on the hill, as the axis remind you of a peony.

From old times Moran Hill has been loved by people for its curious features and beautiful scenery.

Chongryu Cliff facing Rungna Islet overgrown with weeping willows along the clear River Taedong, the Ulmil and Choesung and other pavilions rising in woods along the ridges, ancient rampart and city gates add much to the beauty of the landscape.

Azaleas around the Choesung Pavilion and in Hungbu, peach blossoms in the Youth Park, peonies and broad-leaved clove trees around the Ulmil Pavilion and apricot blossoms at the foot of Moran Hill are sights to see in balmy spring days.

Over 70 species of birds fly about the hill.

Moran Hill was converted into a nice recreation ground for the people after liberation of the country.

Sungri, Phyonghwa, Aeryon and other pavilions in the national style, different kinds of amusement facilities, wrestling, swinging and seesawing sites are well harmonized with surrounding scenery.

The Kim Il Sung Stadium, the Moranbong Theatre, the Kaeson Youth Park, an open-air theatre in the Youth Park, the Moran Restaurant, an afforestation exhibition, a small zoo and Moran Falls have been built.

The Kumnung Tunnel and Kumnung Tunnel No. 2 through Moran Hill are linked with the Rungna and Chongryu bridges across the River Taedong.

Moran Hill is associated with the revolutionary history of President Kim Il Sung, leader
Kim Jong Il and anti-Japanese heroine Kim Jong Suk.

The Kaeson revolutionary site is situated at the foot of the hill. There President Kim Il Sung had an emotional meeting with people and made a historic speech after his triumphant return to the homeland. There are seen monumental structures. They include the Arch of Thiumph ,
Kim Il Sung Stadium, the monument to President Kim Il Sung's handwritings from his address at a rally to welcome him on his triumphant return to the homeland and the mural painting in commemoration of President Kim Il Sung's speech on his triumphant return.

At the foot of the hill are the Jonsung revolutionary site which conveys the revolutionary achievements of President Kim Il Sung who led the Fatherland Liberation War to victory and the Hungbu revolutionary site which is associated with the history of leader Kim Jong Il and trees bearing slogans written during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle.

Many historic remains, including the mossy rampart of the Walled City of Pyongyang, the Ulmil, Choesung, Pubyok and Chongryu Pavilions and the Chilsong, Hyonmu, Jongum and Tongam Gates show the extraordinary talents of the Korean ancestors.

Together with prosperous Pyongyang, Moran Hill is changing its appearance into a better plesure ground for the people."-《Naenara》

"The Flag of North Korea was adopted on September 8, 1948citation needed, as the national flag and ensign. The red star of Communism can be seen on this flag on a white disk. North Korea had originally adopted a "taegeukgi" following independence from the Japanese Empire with a taoist yin-yang symbol similar to that in the South Korean flag but later revised its flag to more closely reflect that of the USSR. The flag was adopted in 1948, when North Korea became an independent Communist state. The traditional Korean flag was red, white, and blue. The regime retained these colors- with more prominence given to the red- and added a red star on a white disk. The disk recalls the symbol found on the flag of South Korea, and represents the opposing principles of nature. The red stripe expresses revolutionary traditions; while the red star is for Communism. The 2 blue stripes stand for sovereignty, peace and friendship. The white stripe symbolizes purity, and red represents Communist revolution.

The colour red represents revolutionary patriotism. The blue stripes connote "The aspiration of the Korean people to unite with the revolutionary people of the whole world and fight for the victory of the idea of independence, friendship and peace."

A 300-pound (136 kg) North Korean national flag flies from the world's largest flagpole, which is located at Kijŏng-dong, on the North Korean side of the Military Demarcation Line within the Korean Demilitarized Zone. The flag-pole is 160m tall."-wiki

DPRK(North Korea)《World Heritage ( III )》FDC

"「Murals of King Kogukwon’s Tomb」

The Kingdom of Koguryo (277 BC-668 AD), a 1 000-year power in the East, left a lot of valuable cultural heritage to posterity.

One of the representative relics is the tomb murals, which can be said the oldest pictorial inheritance of the Korean nation.

Tomb murals of Koguryo, counted as masterpieces in the pictorial art of the medieval East, contain the peculiar nature of the Koguryo people and the looks of society, economy, culture and way of life in those days delineated with superb artistic skill.

Over 100 mural pieces have been discovered up to now and those unearthed in the area of Pyongyang, the capital of Koguryo, are representative of them.

The majority of them are murals drawn on well-trimmed plastered natural rocks. The fact that the pictures are still vivid after one thousand and several hundred years have passed shows that the skill of making pigments in the period of the Koguryo Dynasty was on a very high plane.

Koguryo tomb murals are diverse in kind such as the figure and genre paintings, the pictures of four guardians and the decorative-patterned paintings.

The figure and genre paintings are pictures of people and their life customs. Its representatives are the world-famous murals of King Kogukwon’s tomb (Anak tomb No. 3) and Tokhungri tomb.

What is common in figure and genre paintings is the representation of strong, enterprising and courageous spirit of the Koguryo people.

The pictures of four guardians which portray imaginary animals—blue dragon, white tiger, red phoenix and tortoise-serpent—charged with the defence of the four directions are also representative tomb murals of the Koguryo Dynasty.

Flawless composition, strong stroke, clear colours and glossy materials made the pictures of four guardians become representative masterpieces of pictures of four guardians in the East in the history of fine arts of the medieval world.

Blue dragon and tortoise-serpent in the Kangso big tomb and red phoenix and white tiger in the Kangso middle tomb are such representative murals.

Besides, the Koguryo tomb murals include decorative-patterned paintings whose representatives are those in King Tongmyong’s Mausoleum. Decorative patterns such as geometrical patterns, flower patterns and patterns portraying imaginary figures and animals were used between main murals, on the ceilings and corners to make the inside of the tomb gorgeous and mysterious.

The Koguryo tomb murals full of the spirit of the audacious and courageous Korean nation and beautiful and noble national sentiments are a great pride of the Korean nation resplendent with 5 000-year-long history. "-《Korea》

"-《Coree》
